When we began to search for the
owners of the Sounds Of Memphis and XL record labels, we were aware
of a small number of their releases, perhaps a CD or two’s worth of
material – an interesting project to do some work on if we could
secure a deal. It took us a few years to track down Gene and Linda
Lucchesi and then a little bit longer to do the deal and get into
the climate-controlled tape vault. Sitting at Ardent Studios in
Memphis lining up the tapes and transferring the music contained on
the reels we realised that we had something more exciting. This was
an untapped mine of great recordings – Southern soul at its very
finest. Our first objective was to get a Barbara Brown album
completed and then a great compilation. Once we had completed those
we realised that we hadn’t even touched the surface of what was
available. Gene Lucchesi, who had started the label in the mid-60s,
had been fairly free with his studio time while employing the best
producers and the best musicians in town. We are now into our third
various artists compilation of the material and if anything this
contains some of the strongest cuts we have ever had.
My favourites come from the lesser-known artists. The two tracks by
Willie Walker (the Goldwax singer) were produced as demos by George
Jackson. The wonderful ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ and the equally classy
‘Run Around’, could quite easily have been released, such is their
quality. I suspect Otis Wheat’s ‘I’m Your Slave’ comes from the same
time and makes you wish that he had recorded more. William Bollinger
recorded for Gene Lucchesi in the 60s and we have unearthed two more
cuts that could easily become dancefloor winners in ‘People Are
Talking’ and ‘I Won’t Have To Cry’. The Jacksonians – from Jackson,
Mississippi – recorded six sides for SOM, of which only two were
issued. We rectify that by digging out two previously unheard
titles.
We have also found recordings from some of the favourites who have
graced our earlier anthologies, such as another unreleased George
Jackson master and a wonderful alternate take of ‘How Can I Get Next
To You’. The Minits have three cuts here, two of which are
unreleased. We have found an unissued Ovations gem called ‘The
Plumber’ and the title track, an unreleased stepper from Louis
Williams. Two other highlights for me are the Dan Greer cuts from
the period when he was in-house producer for the label. They shine a
light on not only his songwriting talents, but also his exceptional
voice.
We also venture into the
80s when Gene’s daughter Linda had taken over the business
determined to prove that Memphis was still a hotbed of talent. She
recorded the exceptionally talented Erma Shaw and Tekelia Kelly,
both showcased here.
Will this goldmine ever be exhausted? I can only answer that
vaguely: we’re on the case and more music will see the light of day.
ACE/Kent Records
"We take the story into the
80s with a couple of recordings from
Tekelia Kelly and Erma Shaw,
showing that Sounds Of Memphis continued to produce soulful gems
into that decade."
* Extensive notes and
rare photos complete this fantastic package
ACE/Kent Records
'Lover Boy' from the
Minits and Tekelia Kelly's 'Because Of You' are sophisticated
ballads of the kind you wouldn't normally associate with Memphis.
Soul and Jazz and Funk
I can’t
recommend this CD enough and urge every living, breathing, Soul
Music fan to grab yourself a copy right now, this minute!
I guarantee - you will not be disappointed.

A Songstress for Life American Cancer Society
Invites Tekelia Kelly to Celebrate Life
Through Song |
Chattanooga, Tennessee - May 18,
2011-
Tekelia Kelly will be one of several
to headline the entertainment for
this year's American Cancer
Society-Chattanooga Relay for Life
event, on Saturday May 21, 2011 at
the First Tennessee Pavilion in
downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee at
6:00 pm. Already in gear for
"celebrating life through song", the
songstress welcomed the opportunity
to be a part, as she kicks-off the
rebirth of her singing, songwriting,
recording, and acting talents.
Tekelia happily accepted the
invitation from event coordinator
Amy Schaffernoth, a dedicated
volunteer of ACS Chattanooga events,
and entertainment coordinator,
singer/songwriter Dana Rodgers.
"I'm glad to be able to help the
American Cancer Society "celebrate
life, fight cancer, and make a world
full of more birthdays", says Ms.
Kelly.
Interestingly, Tekelia had already
purposed that she would be "celebrating
life through song" upon the celebration
of her 50th birthday on September 11,
2009 (911). "With my birthday being on
"911" a very memorable day; and turning
50 years old being a special milestone
in life, I wanted to do something
special and personal to celebrate and
remember the day, and the year. So, I
thought, in giving thanks to God for all
He has given me, I will give back to
Him my gifts, talents, everything I
have; to celebrate life and encourage
mankind", says the 'helper of man'--a
meaning given for her middle name
Cassaundra that also agrees with her
desire to inspire others.
That was before the one-year cancer
survivor was diagnosed with colon
cancer, a few months after her 50th
birthday. About that she says, "I find
it all a blessing, a miracle, and
inspirational: my 50th birthday
celebration and declaration, singing and
songwriting again, publishing my songs,
being diagnosed with colon cancer, going
through surgery and chemotherapy, still
being alive, resolving to celebrate life
with a new norm, finding one of my
30-year old studio recordings "Because
of You" online, and that it had been
released world-wide, and then being
asked to sing for the American Cancer
Society. It's been an amazing ride! I
am truly celebrating life--through
song--and now I will be also 'helping to
make a world full of more birthdays';
thanks to the American Cancer Society!"
Although heavily
involved in music since childhood:
singing solos in church, and performing
for hire as a professional songstress
for special events/occasions, and even
as an entertainer while in college at
Libertyland Theme Park in Memphis,
Tennessee, Tekelia decided to play it
safe after graduating from Memphis State
University; and pursued a career in
industrial engineering and business.
She went on to work professionally for
corporations like Federal Express, First
Tennessee Bank, and Provident
Companies.
Now entrepreneur of
Tekelia C. Kelly Enterprises, doing
business as For Your Information and
Sisters In Business.net, the freelance
project manager has added to her
portfolio over the years projects such
as the University of Tennessee
Chattanooga’s Cross-campus
Smart-classroom Podium Implementation,
Nashville’s Frist Center Emergency
Action Plan Elearning System, Mapco
Petroleum’s Computer Training Program in
Memphis, TN, Sisters In Business.Net
business/social networking platform,
and numerous other projects.
Professionally, she works full-time as
an Instructional Design Coordinator,
creating Elearning courses and managing
the Learning Management System for a
major local security company.
Her latest pet
project TekeliaKelly.com “will be the
boom of her career” says web designers
at DB Graphics. Tekelia kicked-off her
signature project by first searching the
internet to make sure the domain name,
her name, was still available. When she
found that it was, she also discovered
that one of her 1980’s recordings
Because of You, from when signed with
the legendary Sounds of Memphis Studios
in Memphis, TN, had been released
world-wide in June 2010.
“I was so excited!
I thought…oh my goodness…wow…how amazing
is this…and the timing is so perfect…
…from my whole life’s journey to
Memphis, to celebrating my 50th birthday
on 911, to dealing with the cancer
diagnosis, chemotherapy, and resolving
to celebrate life anyway, to
discovering the release of the Because
of You soundtrack, and how I had turned
that particular song into a personal
praise and worship to God, because of
its beautiful title and lyrics--well
before its release was just awe
inspiring!” says Tekelia. Because of
you is part of the song library of Becky
Publishing Company, owner Linda Lucchesi.
I had to soak it all in…and am still
having to. There’s a bigger picture
here. I just thank God! For it truly a
God-thing”, she says.
Tekelia also began
registering her own songs that she had
written as far back as the 1970’s when
she was a teen with BMI (Broadcast Music
Inc.) where she is an official
songwriter and member. Tekelia was
reminded about how she used to write
songs by her sister and business partner
Dorothea Johnson, owner of Inner Glow
Skin Care Service. This led to her
remembering and finding the audio
cassette her mother had given her years
ago that had many of the songs Tekelia
had written, with her actually singing
and playing the piano.
Tekelia’s past
professional performances have included
singing in plays, shows, theatres, on
television and record albums, for
special events and occasions, and in
pageants where she won Miss Black
Chattanooga 1978. She also has
performed at famous music venues such as
Libertyland Theme Park, headlining as a
“Showstopper” at Handy Theatre, Beale
Street, the World’s Fair, National Civil
Rights Museum, Martin Luther
Commemorative Ceremony at Mason Temple;
and with music celebrities such as
Jennifer Holiday, Mavis Staples, Patti
Austin, and O'landar Draper, to name a
few.
Tekelia Kelly is scheduled to take
the stage and revive her life as a
performer on Saturday, May 21, 2011
around 6:00 pm. She will start by
singing a requested repeat
performance of her rendition of the
United States National Anthem during
the opening ceremony. She also sang
the anthem earlier in April during
the Red Bank Relay for LIfe opening
ceremony. Shortly thereafter she
will return to the stage with a
debut performance of her one-woman
"renaissance" show "spanning
generations and genres of music".
There will be something for
everyone", she says.
"It's really nice to be able to sing
in celebration of life, while
keeping alive some of the great
songs and singers of our times",
says the songstress. Given
Tekelia's own world-wide release and
history-making soundtrack "Because
of You", she is not only preserving
history, but making history as well.
Everyone is invited to come out and
join the celebration at the Relay
for Life Chattanooga event downtown
at the First Tennessee Pavilion.
Cancer survivors, their care givers,
and any one who has been touched by
cancer are affectionately invited.
The event is free, and starts
Saturday May 21st 6:00 PM through
Sunday May 22nd 6:00 AM, 2011. It
will be a weekend full of fun,
festivities, food and special
performances.

BLUSH MAGAZINE: Tekelia
Kelly's ‘Her Mark’ Article, February 2008, Chattanooga, TN
Tekelia
Kelly
by Nancy Henderson
"Exuberant" might be too mild a word to describe Tekelia Kelly. The minute you
ask her about Sisters in Business, the company she founded two years ago to
promote businesswomen in the marketplace, she starts talking faster. "My passion
and my vision give me energy;' says the petite, outgoing entrepreneur with the
startlingly firm handshake. "I want the community to be connected. I want
everybody to win.”
A self-proclaimed "geek;' Tekelia majored in industrial engineering at the
University of Memphis and, for 15 years, worked as a service engineer, project
manager and information technology consultant. In 1995, she started her own
computer training business, FYI (For Your Information), setting up programs for
companies and schools. By 1998, she and her husband were ready to come back to
Chattanooga, their hometown.
One day in early 2006, she and her sister were talking about how difficult it is
for women to start and maintain their own businesses. "Well, the first thing
that needs to happen;' she blurted out, "is that everybody needs to be
connected." Inspired by the conversation, Tekelia went home, created the Sisters
in Business (SIB) website and set out to offer advertising, training and
networking events ranging from mixers to workshops to trade shows. The
company, she points out, is "a for-profit business with non-profit outreach
appeal." Members hail from all socioeconomic, cultural and professional
backgrounds. Some own home-based. businesses, mom-and-pop stores and
franchises; others are doctors, lawyers and high-level executives. "It is so
beautiful to see;' says Tekelia. "You get all these different wonderful women,
but they all have a heart of sisterhood."
A performer at heart, she's too busy to pursue theater work right now, but she
makes time to sing on her church's praise team. And SIB gives her the creative
elbowroom she's always craved. "When I was in the corporate world, I would
always have to water myself down;' she says.” Now I can be all the things I'm
shaped to be."
She is especially fired” up about AYES (Alternative Youth Economic Solutions-the
acronym is pronounced a-yes), a training and internship program for teens and
young adults, which is now being offered at Chattanooga State. It's a
3-Certificate job readiness for ages 15 and up. "There are certain parts of our
culture that got lost in terms of mentoring and interpersonal skills.”
Tekelia says, excitement rising in her voice. “The baton handoff got lost
somewhere between adults and youth. It is my passion--can you tell I’m
passionate?—to help bridge that.”
