"Stand Up
Sister"
Ms. Toccora Johnson by
Tekelia C. Kelly

You may have
heard the
old saying
"He's a
stand up
guy", which
typically
means, he's
a man who is
held in high
regard, or
truly
respected
and
appreciated
for his
character.
It is in
this same
spirit that
we present
our "Stand
Up Sister"
Salute for
women we are
proud to
stand up for
and
applaud!
These women
are "Stand
Up Sisters"
not only
because of
their great
efforts,
achievements,
and
abilities,
but also
because of
the heart,
dedication,
and goodwill
they have
while
serving
others.
Our "Stand
Up Sister
Salute" this
Back-to-School
issue goes
to Ms.
Toccora
Johnson.
Toccora is
the program
manager of
Elementary
Programs for
Girls
Incorporated
of
Chattanooga.
Toccora is
in charge of
a team of
program
coordinators,
volunteers,
and many
wonderful
girls
throughout
the
year.
I had the
pleasure of
visiting
Girls' Inc's
"Global
Girl Meets
American
Girl"
summer camp,
and while
greeting
Toccora,
also met a
delightful
young lady
who took me
upstairs to
volunteer.
I
volunteered
in Ms. Raven
Cooper's
class, who
is an
excellent
new program
coordinator.
There I
witnessed a
group of
very
outgoing
girls making
buildings
out of
clay. Their
teamwork was
inspiring,
and they
were very
knowledgeable
about their
assignment--to
choose from
a group of
pictures
that
represented
buildings
from around
the world,
and attempt
to make the
building(s).
The girls
constructed
their models
in such a
way that I
could see
them as
future
engineers,
architects,
artists, and
designers.
What a treat
it was for
me to be in
the company
of such
"strong,
smart and
bold"
girls. It
truly made
my day!
In addition to
Ms. Raven, I
visited with Ms.
Deborah Kelly, a
caring
volunteer who
often came to be
a part of the great
team as well.
That day, we
were all in the
main assembly
room helping
during snack
time. There I
got a personal
tour of the very
impressive "Girl
City" by my
niece and her
friends. They
each had also
helped me make
my very
cherished tower
earlier in Ms.
Raven's class.
While
in Ms. Raven's class, I
asked each girl
to poke a hole
in the clay
tower "to make
it look more
like a cement
wall" (This was
also my way of
creating and
preserving a
special memento
by which to remember each
girl. I
called the
little
invention, our "Girl
Tower of emPower",
made with the
help of
my new strong,
smart, and bold little girl
friends at Girls
Inc.
Also, during
snack time, some
of the girls and
I played rounds
of
hand-and-rhyme
games. Wow!
This was a
throwback that
sparked such fun
childhood
memories! It was such
a fun and
fulfilling day! That is
why when my
niece called a
few weeks later
to ask that I
come to her "end of camp
presentation",
I answered with
great excitement
"YES!".
To spend time
with a child who
personally wants
you to share in
their life is
such a precious
and invaluable
opportunity. I'm
so glad I had
the opportunity.
To Ms. Toccora,
you are indeed a
"Stand Up
Sister"!
Your leadership
and empowering
acts of
goodwill,
creativity,
intelligence,
and decorum are
seeds that will
long produce
much fruit in
the girls of
Girls' Inc.
Kudos to you, your great
team, and the
Girls Inc
organization,
for all the
outstanding work
you do to help girls
be "strong,
smart, and
bold". Thank
you, also, for
giving girls a
great
summer!

Embracing and
Empowering Diversity
As a side note, I
can remember when
teaching children
both my children at
home and learner's
at school about
socializing, and
interacting with
others, even on
subjects as general
as who is your
favorite singer,
that I would say,
"We're all
different, that's
why we're all the
same.

As we got off the bus at
a home for mentally and
physically challenged
children in Copse,
Jamaica, I didn't expect
to find a football
player. While the teen
choir and the other
adult chaperones
dispersed to find kids
to hug, love, and play
with, I came upon a
young man named
William.

In his book
Adventures Among Ants: A
Global Safari with a
Cast of Trillions,
Mark Moffett reflects on
his early childhood
fascination with ants-an
interest that didn't die

Moffett's preoccupation

expert on the subject.
His study has given him
marvelous insights about
these industrious
